SS Foam Queen, United Kingdom, Storeship, Built1922, 811 Tonnage, Capt. A T Mastin,

A painted tile of the ship in the centre of a life Boyle frame, made from the salvaged materials of the ship.

In 1925, the coaster RIVER EXE passed from DR Llewellyn, Merrett & Price (Merrett Bros.) of Cardiff  to the London & Channel Islands SS Co. Ltd. (Cheeswright & Ford).
This ship, under the name changed to FOAM QUEEN , sailed mainly on the London - Channel Islands route until the outbreak of World War II.
On the night of 31 May to 1 June 1940, she took part in the evacuation of Allied troops from the beaches of Dunkirk (Operation Dynamo). She transported 98 soldiers to the British shore at that time . She was commanded at that time by Captain W. Gubbon.

For a number of war months, FOAM QUEEN  sailed between ports in southern and eastern England. These voyages, because of the threat from small Kriegsmarine vessels , were usually made in coastal convoys. On 2 November 1943, she sailed from Southend with eighteen other vessels forming convoy CW 221, bound for St. Helens Roa , where she was to arrive the following day.

The only escort was the old destroyer HMS WHITSHEAD . Shortly after putting to sea, the convoy was spotted by a German aircraft. Nine units of the German 5th Torpedo Chaser Flotilla (5. S-Bootflotille) sailed to meet CW 221. Despite artillery fire from HMS WHITSHEAD and some armed vessels, the S-boats managed to take up positions for a torpedo attack. Torpedoes fired by S 136 and S 138 sank the freighter DONA ISABEL and the coaster STORAA.

The attack ended tragically for FOAM QUEEN - hit by a torpedo from the S 100 racer , saving itself from sinking, it washed up on the coastal rocks of Beachy Head near Hastings, and eight members of its crew lost their lives. It is worth adding that some publications attribute the sinking of FOAM QUEEN to the S 138  racer.
