WW1 Austrian Military Bravery Medal Bronze Grade with the inscription "FORTITVDINI" is a historical Austro-Hungarian Empire military decoration from the First World War. It was awarded for acts of courage in battle to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men, and sometimes allied forces.
The medal with the "FORTITVDINI" inscription on the reverse was introduced in April 1917, during World War I, under the reign of Emperor Charles I (Karl I). Earlier versions under Emperor Franz Joseph I had the German motto "Der Tapferkeit" ("For Bravery"). The switch to the Latin "FORTITVDINI" was intended to be a language-neutral motto within the multi-ethnic empire.
-
The Bronze Medal was the fourth class introduced in February 1915 and was the most common of the bravery medals.
-
It was the Austro-Hungarian equivalent of the British Military Medal. Recipients were not entitled to a lifelong pension, unlike those who received the gold or silver medals.
This specific "FORTITVDINI" version features the bust of Emperor Charles I on the front (obverse).
