John Blackwall who was a well known expert on spiders and a friend of Charles Darwin was born in Manchester on 20 January 1790.

He lived at Hendre Housenear until his death,

He was interested in nature from an early age, first in birds and then spider’s on which he published his first article in 1827,

He published A History of the Spiders of Great Britain and Ireland (2 volumes, 1861–1864, which included accounts of 304 species and gave the first adequate descriptions of British spiders,

He died 11 May 1881,

Fascinating letter addressed to the Rev O.P. Cambridge, discussing spiders and a recent published book,

Pickard-Cambridge was interested in natural history from an early age and his first publication was made in 1853,

His main interest was in spiders though he wrote also on birds and butterflies and moths.
