Axis powers
Germany, Italy, and Japan were the main Axis powers, which were linked in a defensive alliance by the Tripartite Pact.
Five other countries joined the Axis during the war: Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, and Croatia.
Allies
The main Allied powers were the United States, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, France, and China. Other countries that joined the Allies included Australia, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, and more.
The war began on the 1st September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland and lasted for six years.
The Allies defeated the Axis powers in 1945. The four victorious powers, the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, and France, shared administration of Germany and Berlin.
On May 8, 1945, World War II in Europe came to an end. As the news of Germany’s surrender reached the rest of the world, thousands of people gathered to celebrate in the streets, clutching newspapers that declared Victory in Europe (V-E Day).
Later that year, US President Harry S. Truman announced Japan’s surrender and the end of World War II. The news spread quickly and celebrations erupted across the United States.
On September 2, 1945, formal surrender documents were signed aboard the USS Missouri, designating the day as the official Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day).
